Scholarships & Grants

Gordon-Conwell’s Hamilton campus offers multiple categories of scholarship and grant moneys to qualified master’s-level students. Most scholarships are awarded to students only at the beginning of their program of studies at Gordon-Conwell, meaning that if a student enrolls without a scholarship, he/she will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship at a later date. Merit-Based Scholarships

You must complete your application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and your Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st be considered for the merit-based scholarships listed below. Note that these scholarships are for full-time residential students who have not yet taken a class at our Hamilton campus. Recipients will be notified by March 1st. Please note: the award amounts of these scholarships are based on 10 courses per year. 

The Presidential Scholarship for Future Christian Leaders

This full-tuition scholarship is available to up to three applicants for full-time study beginning in the fall semester.  The recipient(s) of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for Christian leadership upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “advance Christ’s kingdom in every sphere of life” in service to the Church. The recipient must have leadership experience, a strong academic background and must complete the application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of study.

Dr. Douglas G. Pratt Scholarship

Named in honor of Dr. Douglas G. Pratt, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, the Dr. Douglas G. Pratt Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship granted to two applicants who demonstrate a call to pastoral ministry in the local church, have the capacity to lead a large congregation, and show exceptional promise as future pastors in the Reformed or Presbyterian traditions.  The recipients will also be required to attend two weeks of intentional mentoring and experiential learning at First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, FL, during the month of January.  Applicants must complete the application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of study.

The Raymond and Priscilla Lee Urban Ministry Scholarship

The recipient of this award will demonstrate a commitment to urban ministry.  The recipient will be required to live in Lynn, Massachusetts, and commit to an urban-oriented Mentored Ministry in Lynn.  He or she must also register for a minimum of two Urban MInistry courses through Gordon-Conwell’s Center for Urban Ministerial Education in Boston, Massachusetts. Applicants must complete the application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of study. Up to two students at Gordon-Conwell may be receiving this scholarship at a time.

Rev. Michael Haynes Scholarship

Named in honor of the late Reverend Michael E. Haynes, longtime Trustee of Gordon-Conwell and pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, MA, this $17,500/year scholarship is available to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will be African-American students committed to serving the Church.  Preference will be given to those in the MDiv program or called to pastoral ministry. Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon- Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. The Rev. Michael Haynes Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Latino/a Student Scholarship

This $17,500/year scholarship is available to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will be Latino students committed to serving the Church.  Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. The Latino/a Student Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Multicultural Development Scholarship

This $17,500/year scholarship is available to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will be African-American and/or Latino students committed to serving the Church. Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon- Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. The Multicultural Development Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Rev. Timothy J. Keller Scholarship for Pastoral Ministry

Named in honor of Rev. Timothy J. Keller (M.Div. ’75), pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church, who has faithfully sought to communicate the truth of God’s Word for more than 20 years, the Rev. Timothy J. Keller Scholarship for Pastoral Ministry is a $15,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for pastoral ministry upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “live biblically” in service to the Church. Recipients must demonstrate experience in ministry, must express a desire to engage in vocational pastoral ministry within the local church upon graduation, and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell’s Master of Divinity program and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Dr. J Christy Wilson Jr. Scholarship for Missions Ministry

Named in honor of Dr. J. Christy Wilson, Jr., former professor of missions at Gordon-Conwell who faithfully served Christ in Afghanistan for 22 years as a missionary, pastor, and teacher, the Dr. J. Christy Wilson, Jr. Scholarship for Missions Ministry is a $15,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for missions service upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “engage globally” in service to the Church. “Missions” is broadly defined to include both international and local missions, social justice ministry, urban or rural ministry and campus ministry. Recipients must demonstrate experience in missions, must express a desire to engage in missions as a full-time vocation upon graduation, and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st.  This scholarship is renewable each year of study.

Dr. David F. Wells Scholarship for Teaching Ministry

Named in honor of Dr. David F. Wells, longtime theology professor at Gordon- Conwell who embodies the Seminary’s commitment to academic excellence, the Dr. David F. Wells Scholarship for Teaching Ministry is a $15,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester.  Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for teaching ministry and academic work upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “think theologically” in service to the Church. Recipients must have received a GPA of 3.5 or higher at an accredited undergraduate institution and must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Scholarship for Professional Counselors

The Scholarship for Counselors is a $10,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award will demonstrate exceptional promise for counseling ministry upon graduation from Gordon-Conwell and will reflect the Seminary’s commitment to “advance Christ’s kingdom in every sphere of life” in service to the Church. Recipients must have a degree in psychology or sociology, or must be a graduating senior planning to graduate with a degree in one of these fields. Recipients should complete their application for admission to Gordon- Conwell’s Master of Arts in Counseling degree program and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Military Chaplaincy Scholarship

The Military Chaplaincy Scholarship is a $10,000/year scholarship granted to up to two applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award must be enrolled in the chaplain candidate program during their time at Gordon- Conwell and must express the desire to serve the Church as a military chaplain upon graduation from the Seminary. Applicants must complete their application for admission to Gordon- Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study and can be combined with military scholarships and grants like the Yellow Ribbon Program and tuition assistance given to chaplain candidates.

Master of Theology (Th.M.) Scholarship

The Master of Theology discount is a $600 off per course scholarship granted to up to five applicants for full-time study, beginning in the fall semester. Recipients of this award must be enrolled in one of our Master of Theology programs, and must demonstrate exceptional aptitude in their field of study and strong Christian character. Applicants must complete their application for admission to Gordon-Conwell and the Merit Scholarship Application by February 1st. This scholarship will be applied to all eight courses of the Th.M. program, provided the student remains full-time and in good academic standing.

Recipients will be notified by March 1st. Merit-based scholarships are not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.

Ministry Scholarships

These scholarships are available to new students beginning their studies at the Hamilton campus.

The Partnership Program Scholarship

Available to new, incoming students of all degree programs except the Master of Theology (ThM), the Partnership Scholarship offers a full-tuition scholarship. This scholarship enables students to bring with them the kind of community and prayer support that is so crucial during the seminary years. Students in the Partnership Program participate in financial literacy events and the raising of outside funds.  The Partnership Scholarship may not be combined with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. Applicants for the Partnership Scholarship should submit their Partnership Scholarship application by April 15 for the fall semester or September 15 for the spring semester.  This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.  Click here to apply.

Billy Graham Scholarship

Made possible through the generosity of friends of the Seminary in honor of Rev. Billy Graham, Co-founder of GCTS and trustee emeritus, the Graham Scholarship is available to the first 25 new, incoming students each year who commit to full-time study by returning the Agreement form and scholarship deposit included in the acceptance packet. The Billy Graham Scholarship offers $800/course towards tuition and is awarded on a first- come-first-serve basis, so you must act soon. The Billy Graham Scholarship is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. Available for all degree programs except the Master of Theology (ThM). This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time study.

Trustee Scholarship

Named in honor of the Seminary’s trustees who are committed to reducing the tuition cost for the student, the Trustee is available to new, incoming students who commit to part-time or full-time study by returning the Agreement form and scholarship deposit included in your acceptance packet, but do not receive the Graham scholarship and offers $525/course towards tuition. The Trustee Grant is not able to be combined with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship. Available for all degree programs, as well as for online students. This scholarship is renewable each year of full-time or part-time study.

Local Pastor Scholarship

The Local Pastor Scholarship is a 40% off tuition scholarship available to pastors currently serving in a church located within New England. This scholarship is available at our South Hamilton campus and is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.

Local Laity Scholarship

The Local Laity Scholarship is a 30% off tuition scholarship available to lay people located in New England, who are currently serving on leadership at their church and are recommended by their pastor for further theological study. This scholarship is available at our South Hamilton campus and is not combinable with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships, with the exception of the Pierce Scholarship.

Compass Leadership Scholarship

The Compass Scholarship is a $550/course scholarship available to alumni of Gordon-Conwell’s Compass program.

Please note that students may not receive both a merit and ministry scholarship and that neither type of scholarship is applicable to individuals pursuing the Doctor of Ministry degrees.

Fellowships & Research Scholarships

Institute for the Study of the Black Christian Experience Scholar Program

The Institute for the Study of the Black Christian Experience (ISBCE) Scholar Program is a 50% tuition discount granted to five students who demonstrate a commitment to the work of race relations and reconciliation or the study of the Black Christian Experience.  Applicants for the ISBCE Scholar Program should complete their application to Gordon-Conwell and the ISBCE Scholar application, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.  Click here to apply.

The John and Lois Pierce Fellowship

The Pierce Fellowship is available to select incoming and returning students who demonstrate experience and ongoing commitment to small group leadership, spiritual formation, and disciple- building. Each member of the Fellowship will be mentored by the Pierce Center staff leaders and equipped in facilitating initiatives to accomplish the mission of the Center. The $1,500 annual tuition subsidy is combinable with other grants or scholarships and open to all degree programs except the Master of Theology. Applications are accepted each spring for participation the following academic year starting in the fall semester. Byington Scholarship

The Byington Scholarship is available to select returning students who serve as faculty assistants. Byington Scholars are selected by individual faculty members, and applications are available through the Academic Dean’s office.  The $600/semester stipend is combinable with other grants or scholarships.  Click here for more information and to apply.

Ministry Partnerships

Gordon College

Gordon College Partnership

Gordon College juniors, seniors and graduate students may apply to take up to two Gordon-Conwell courses for credit, for free.  Gordon College graduates from the Biblical Studies and Christian Ministry programs may be eligible for up to 24 Advanced Standing graduate credits in a Gordon-Conwell Master of Divinity program.  See details here.

Pioneers

Appointed Pioneers missionaries in pre-field training, current field workers and staff members accepted into the Pre-Field Graduate Certificate Program or Advanced Degree Programs can receive a tuition discount of 50% per course.

Young LifeYoung Life

Current Young Life staff members (full-time and part-time) serving in the North Shore of Boston in eligible degree programs can receive a tuition discount of 40% per course and are eligible for a 20% discount on on-campus housing rates. Eligible degree programs are the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts (Religion).

Funding From Other Sources

The Christopher Brown Scholarship

The Christopher Brown Scholarship Fund is a merit-based scholarship designed to provide financial assistance to Gordon-Conwell students. A $1,600 scholarship will be awarded annually ($1,600 to one student or $800 to two students) to first-time or returning students who meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate dedication in ministry (Hebrews 12:1) by providing the following in writing:
    • Personal testimony
    • Previous and current ministry involvement and contribution
    • Community connections and involvement
    • Current pastor’s endorsement
    • Intended ministry goals
  • Are committed to active, full-time ministry during and/or after degree is achieved.
  • Have a ministry endorsement from a pastor.
  • May be either part-time or full-time students, taking at least 4 – 6 classes throughout the year.
  • Have demonstrated financial need by:
    • Completing the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov or providing copies of most recent W-2/tax information.
    • May also demonstrate financial need in writing, in addition to FAFSA or W-2.
  • It is expected, but not required, that students have a 3.0 GPA in previous studies or at Gordon-Conwell.
  • New students must be reserved (matriculation deposit and bio form submitted) before their application will be considered.

The Christopher Brown Scholarship is not automatically renewed. Therefore students should apply each year.

The deadline for fall applications is April 1.The student(s) being awarded the scholarship will be notified in writing by the school and funds will be deposited into the student(s) account early in the fall semester. Click here to download an application.

The John and Lois Pierce Fellowship

The John and Lois Pierce Fellowship is designed to develop the personal and ministry potential of seminary students. Awarded annually to returning full-time students in a master’s program on the Charlotte campus, the Pierce Fellowship is a $1400 educational grant. Fellowship recipients will receive a $700 grant in the fall semester and a $700 grant in the spring or summer semester once they register for their 6th 3-credit course of the year. The fellowship will be awarded to applicants who have demonstrated experience and ongoing commitment to small group leadership, spiritual formation, and disciple-building training. Fellowship members will be expected to fulfill specific responsibilities in these areas. Available only for returning students who have completed at least two semesters at Gordon-Conwell and plan to take at least 6 3-credit courses per year. Team Ministry Grant

The Team Ministry Grant is a need-based scholarship available to qualified married couples who are enrolled as full-time degree students. In a semester in which both are enrolled full-time (a minimum of seven credit hours), one student will pay the standard Charlotte rate and the second will receive scholarship assistance to reduce his/her tuition by 50%.  Any semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) in which a Team Ministry Grant is awarded, no other seminary administered, need-based tuition assistance will be available.

The award is for one academic year and is subject to availability of funds. This scholarship is renewable, however you must reapply for financial aid each year. See the Team Ministry Agreement Form for more information about this scholarship.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist full-time Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) staff members with tuition expenses at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The Charlotte campus offers an affiliate ministry scholarship equal to a 40% discount on tuition for accepted students. Please contact the Charlotte Admissions office for further information.

Sid Bradley Counseling Scholarship

The Sid Bradley Counseling Scholarship ($3800 annually to one student or $1900 to two students) is awarded to students enrolled full time in the MACC program who embody the characteristics of the founding dean of the M.A. In Christian Counseling degree, Dr. Sid Bradley. MACC students who exemplify traits of Christian leadership, demonstrate competence in counseling skills, and are pursuing passionate service in the field of counseling are considered for the award, which is determined by the MACC faculty. No application is necessary. The students being awarded the scholarship will be notified in writing by the school and funds will be deposited into the student(s) accounts early in the fall and/or spring semester.

Rodney L. Cooper Counseling Scholarship

The Rodney L. Cooper Counseling Scholarship Fund is designed to provide assistance to counseling students who represent populations that have been historically marginalized by society and/or underrepresented in the field of professional counseling. A 100% tuition scholarship will be awarded annually (or two 50% tuition scholarships) to first-time or returning students who meet the following criteria:

  • Represent a population historically marginalized by society and/or underrepresented in the field of professional counseling
  • Are committed to a career or ministry in professional counseling
  • Have an endorsement from a pastor
  • Maintain at least part time status in the MACC program, taking at least 5 classes per year

The Rodney L. Cooper Counseling Scholarship is not automatically renewed. Therefore, students should reapply each year. The deadline for fall applications is April 1. The student(s) being awarded the scholarship will be notified in writing by the school and funds will be deposited into the student(s) account early in the fall semester. Note: This scholarship fund will be available for the first time in the 2019-2020 school year.

Cohort Tuition Package

A student eligible to select the 2018-2019 Cohort Tuition Package is

• A degree seeking student;
• Enrolled in instructed, classroom course(s) for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters;
• Committed to taking five or more courses per year for two years.

The yearly tuition rate will be a total of $8600 ($8100 is tuition, $$500 is the Cohort fee), composed of two billing statements of $4300 each, payable in September and February. In addition, students may elect to take as many courses as they wish during the year (spring, summer, and fall semesters)—the total tuition will remain $8600. This tuition package is guaranteed for two years although student may opt out after the first year. (Tuition has historically increased an average of at least 6% a year. There will be no tuition rate increases for the two years of this 2018 and 2019 Cohort Tuition Package.)  Download the Cohort Agreement Form.

The Partnership Program

Available to new, incoming students of all degree programs (except Th.M. degree and the Doctor of Ministry), the Partnership Program offers a full-tuition scholarship. This scholarship enables the student to bring with them the kind of community and prayer support that is so crucial during the seminary years. The Partnership Program may not be combined with other Gordon-Conwell scholarships. Applicants for this scholarship should submit their Partnership Program Scholarship application by April 15.

Team Ministry Grant

The Team Ministry Grant is a need-based scholarship available to qualified married couples who are enrolled as full-time degree students. In a semester in which both are enrolled full-time (a minimum of seven credit hours), one student will receive scholarship assistance up to 50% of the tuition cost. In essence, this scholarship allows for one student to pay full price and the spouse to pay 50% of the tuition cost. Any semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) in which a Team Ministry Grant is awarded, no other seminary administered, need-based tuition assistance will be available.
